Arthur was 26 years and 5 months old when he joined the army on 29th April 1916. He was living in Chester and gave his occupation as manager of a boot shop when he attested. He lived at home with his father - 4 Stocks Lane Chester. Arthur was 5' 8" tall and had brown hair.
He arrived in France on 5th September 1917 and was initially sent to the Rouen base, before being posted to the Ypres Salient. He was admitted into 44 CCS with "ICT right foot" and stayed in hospital for 5 days. Just over a month later he was killed in a British attack on the Germans the Battle of Passchendaele. The battalion casualties for that day were: 9 Officers and 327 other ranks killed or missing. As he has no known grave he is remembered on the Tyne Cot memorial to the missing.
